Rather than give the standard bust, waist, and hip measurements, Miss Peru contestants highlighted gender-based violence statistics during Sunday's pageant.
Leading the protest was Camila Canicoba of Lima who said "my measurements are: 2,202 cases of femicide reported in the last nine years in my country".
Pageant organizers also participated, projecting news clippings of prominent gender-based attacks while the contestants modeled bikinis.
The contest organiser, Jessica Newton, told the AFP news agency: "Unfortunately there are many women who do not know, and think they are isolated cases.
- "3,114 women victims of trafficking up until 2014"
- "65 per cent of university women who are assaulted by their partners"
- "more than 70 per cent of women in our country are victims of street harassment"
The contestants were vying for the chance to represent Peru at the Miss Universe competition in Las Vegas.
