(Experts) Alabama Has Worst Poverty In Entire Developed World

“Politicians who say, ‘There’s nothing I can do about that’ are simply wrong,” says U.N. poverty expert.

Following his tour of the United States, Philip Alston, the U.N.'s Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, relayed that Alabama has the worst poverty he has seen in the developed world.

"I think it's very uncommon in the First World. This is not a sight that one normally sees. I'd have to say that I haven't seen this," [Alston] told Connor Sheets of AL.com earlier this week as they toured a community in Butler County where "raw sewage flows from homes through exposed PVC pipes and into open trenches and pits."

Among Alston's chief considerations were diseases related to unsanitary conditions and the racial disparities related to human rights issues:

Of particular concern to Alston are specific poverty-related issues that have surfaced across the country in recent years, such as an outbreak of hookworm in Alabama in 2017—a disease typically found in nations with substandard sanitary conditions in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, as reported by The Guardian.

Economic inequality and racial discrimination have also been linked with civil rights abuses, particularly in Alabama and other states across the South. Police shootings of unarmed black men and women are also of deep concern to the U.N.

You, Priscilla, are ridiculous. And probably comfortably sheltered from such awful communities. Lemme take a wild guess that you're white?? lol

And the sad part is that they think Donald lunatic Trump is on THEIR side.. "Believe me", he's NOT

Priscilla, I am white; I know exactly where this is (Princeton, AL); the school is just up the road; and the whole valley is white.

Priscilla, the article is not talking about third world countries, but the wealthiest nation in the world and it is comparing it to other developed, not undeveloped countries. The reason the extreme poverty can exist in Alabama is that the US federal and AL state government has implemented policies that only benefit the rich, are imposing inhumane budget cuts to all social programs AND particularly discards the value of Black lives. I have lived in third world countries and in Alabama and there is a depravity in the way my country of birth devalues our people when there is so much wealth available.

Priscilla, your loyalty to your state is commendable, but these U.N. Special Rapporteurs have no reason to lie. Please take off your rose coloured glasses and try to be objective. Successive federal governments, on both sides of the political fence, have done nothing to alleviate the conditions under which some people live. And consistently voting against their best interest (i.e. voting "red") is not helping them. When politicians feel they are "safe" in a certain area, they tend not to do anything much for them. And the "blue" politicians should be stepping up to the plate and then, perhaps, they would swing voters to their cause.
